横林しほり博士の医学研セミナー / Institutional seminar by Dr. Shihori Yokobayashi

　理研の横林先生による医学研セミナーを主催しました。横林さんは、私の出身学科の偉大なる先輩方の1人であり、私が卒業研究をした山本正幸研究室でご一緒させていただきました。私は卒業研究１年の後、隣のキャンパスの分生研の宮島篤研究室に修士として移ったのですが、そこから間もなく山本研から横林さんを含む渡邊研が分生研にやってきて、また同じ研究所に所属した、というご縁もありました。ので、横林さんと呼ばせていただいております。当時の私達の学科には、何人かの先輩方が神々として尊敬を集めていましたが、横林さんもその神の１人でした。神を召喚できるとは、私もここまで何とか来れたのか、と感慨深かったです。

　横林さんは、現在iPS細胞を用いて生殖細胞分化やエピゲノムについて研究されており、その成果を発表していただきました。同じiPS細胞でも、株によってエピゲノム状態が異なり、その差異が分可能にも影響していることを学びました。また、巡り巡って、横林さんも私もiPS細胞を使っているのが、何だか不思議な感じがします。でもおかげで、共同研究の可能性もありそうで、ありがたいです。

　横林さんが京都にいらっしゃったことは、前々から存じ上げていたのですが、最近横浜理研でラボを持たれたことを伺って、即オファーし、ご快諾いただきました。セミナー後の懇親会も、いろんなことを思い出して楽しく過ごさせていただきました。ありがとうございました。

I hosted an Institutional seminar by Dr. Shihori Yokobayashi from RIKEN. Dr. Yokobayashi is one of the greatest seniors in my department, and we worked together in the Dr. Masayuki Yamamoto's lab, where I did my BS thesis. After the one year of my BS thesis, I moved to Dr. Atsushi Miyajima's lab at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences on the next campus as a master's student. However, soon after, the Watanabe's lab members, including Dr. Yokobayashi, came to the same Institute from the Yamamoto's lab, and we belonged to the same Institute again. In our department at that time, some of our seniors were respected as gods, and Dr. Yokobayashi was one of them.

　Dr. Yokobayashi currently studies germ cell differentiation and epigenomics using iPS cells, which she presented in this seminar. I learned that even in the same iPS cells, the epigenomic state differs from strain to strain, and that these differences affect the differentiation potential. I felt that it is kind of strange that somehow both Dr. Yokobayashi and I are using iPS cells now. However, there seems to be a possibility of collaboration between us thanks to that.

I had known that Dr. Yokobayashi was in Kyoto, but when I heard that she had recently started a lab at RIKEN Yokohama, I immediately made an offer, which she gladly accepted. I enjoyed the happy hour after the seminar too. Thank you very much.
