田上俊輔博士の医学研セミナー/Institutional seminar by Dr. Shunsuke Tagami
田上俊輔博士の医学研セミナーを開催しました。田上博士は、以前医学研セミナーで講演してくださった平野博士と同じく、私の大学学部、大学院の学科、専攻の後輩です。今回は、生命の起源、RNAワールド、RNAワールドからいかにして現在のセントラルドグマができてきたか、という生命の根本に関する壮大なテーマのお話をしてくれました。具体的な内容としては、田上博士がNature Chemistryに発表された内容を中心に、最近の結果まで紹介してくださいました。リボザイムがあることは知っていましたが、RNAを合成できるリボザイムがあることも全く知らなかったので、勉強になりました。 RNAがRNAを合成できるか、そのRNAによるRNA合成を短いペプチドが促進できるか、もし促進できるのであれば、そこからRNA->タンパク質の翻訳ができていったのではないか、という、ロマンがあると同時にそう言われればそうかもしれないという説得力のあるお話でした（私が正しく理解できていれば）。
ペプチドは登場するものの、タンパク質らしいタンパク質は出てこないし、DNAに至ってはイントロ以外では全く触れられないという、非常に稀有なセミナーでした。なんせ、セントラルドグマが全く出来上がっていないわけですから。否応なく化学と生物学の境界、生命と非生命の境界に思いを馳せました（私では何の答えも出せませんでしたけど）。 とても多くの方においでいただけて、やはり興味深いテーマなんだな、と実感しました。田上博士と私の妻は大学学部の同級生でしたので、セミナー後に夕食を家族でご一緒し、思い出話に花を咲かせていました。 We hosted an Institutional seminar by Dr. Shunsuke Tagami. He and I graduated from the same Department at the University of Tokyo like Dr. Arisa Hirano who also gave a talk before. His talk was about the origin of life, the RNA world, and how the central dogma emerged from the RNA world. The topic is very magnificent. He presented the data published in his Nature Chemistry paper as well as some new data from his own lab. I knew the existence of ribozymes, but knew nothing about the ones with the RNA polymerase activity, so I learned a lot.
The questions were whether RNA can synthesize RNA, whether short peptides can enhance the activity of the RNA synthesis by RNA, and if so, is it the origin of translation of RNA to proteins? The story is very cool, and it does seem to be so as I listened to what he said (if I understood correctly). Peptides did show up in his talk, but there was no protein-like proteins. DNA was not even mentioned at all except in the introduction of his talk, which is an extremely rare talk. The central dogma was far from complete. His talk made me think about the borders between chemistry and biology, and between life and non-life (I could not draw any conclusions though). I was convinced that the topic was interesting as I saw a lot of people came to the seminar. Dr. Tagami and my wife were classmates when they were undergraduate students, so we had dinner together with my entire family.
