This was supposed to be in person on December 12th...

It was back in January, so quite some time has passed, but we invited Dr. Jonathan Arias from Vilnius University in Lithuania to speak at an Institutional seminar. We had originally planned to hold the seminar in person at the institute to coincide with his visit to Japan, but on the very day of his departure, balloons drifted in from a neighboring country, causing all airports in Lithuania to be closed. Unfortunately, this meant he was unable to come to Japan, and naturally, the seminar could not take place. We postponed the event and held it online instead in January.

The iPS Cell Foundation is establishing iPS cells from donors with homozygous HLA types in order to provide cells applicable to a wider range of people, and Jonathan and his team are pursuing a similar initiative in Lithuania. In this seminar, he gave an overview of that work. Even within Europe, genetic backgrounds vary from region to region, and it seems that unique SNPs have been observed in Lithuania as well. The discussion even touched on the Viking era, making it extremely fascinating. Since triple-homozygous HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-C donors have been identified, I look forward to the provision of “super-donor” iPS cells in Lithuania in the future.

Although there were some operational challenges on the day, such as unstable internet connectivity, I’m glad I was able to hear the presentation. Thank you very much. Next time, let’s meet in person!
