星名直祐博士の医学研セミナー / Institutional seminar by Dr. Naosuke Hoshina

　早稲田大学高等研究所のの星名直祐さんに医学研セミナーをしていただきました。星名さんと私は、大学学部時代の同級生でした。これでセミナーにお呼びした同級生は、３人目です。あと何人か呼べます。ものすごく久しぶりにお会いできました。もしかすると大学院卒業以来だったかもしれません。

　星名さんは、大学院生の頃から今に至るまでProtocadherinに関する研究を続けており、この日もProtocadherinが脳神経ネットワーク形成のための分子コード（の一部）である、というお話をしてくれました。学部や大学院時代の坂野研の研究を思い出す（星名さんは坂野研ではなかったですが）、興味深いお話でした。質問も非常に多く出て、活発な議論ができました。セミナー時間を延長したくらいです。 　セミナーの後は食事をご一緒して、昔話から、お互いの留学時代の話、家族の話、今の研究の話をすることができました。非常に有意義な時間を過ごせました。ありがとうございました！

Naosuke Hoshina from the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study gave an Institutional seminar. Dr. Hoshina and I were classmates during our undergraduate years. He is the third classmate I’ve invited to give a seminar here. I can still invite a few more. It had been an incredibly long time since we last met—perhaps since we graduated from graduate school.

　Dr. Hoshina has been conducting research on protocadherin since his graduate school days, and on this occasion, he spoke about how protocadherin serves as (part of) the molecular code for the formation of neural networks in the brain. It was a fascinating talk that brought back memories of the research conducted in the Sakano Lab during our undergraduate and graduate school days (though Dr. Hoshina was not actually a member of the Sakano Lab). There were so many questions that we had a lively discussion—so much so that we even had to extend the seminar.

　After the seminar, we had dinner together and talked about everything from old times to our experiences studying abroad, our families, and our current research. It was a very meaningful time. Thank you very much!
