升本英利博士の医学研セミナー / Institutional seminar by Dr. Hidetoshi Masumoto

　京都大学医学部の升本英利先生に、医学研セミナーをしていただきました。升本先生も坂口秀哉先生と同じように、私がとある研究費の申請に向けて、心臓オルガノイドを研究されている方とお話ししたいなー、と考えていたところ、これまたとあるきっかけで本当に升本先生とお話しする機会を得ることができました。とある、ばっかりですけども。

　いろいろな形の心臓オルガノイドが開発されてきていますが、升本先生のオルガノイドはいくつかの形態があり、目的によって使い分けるというのがおもしろいです。動物に移植した先で、オルガノイドにちゃんと血管網ができてくるというのも驚きでした。また、COVID-19感染症のモデルとしてもオルガノイドが活用されていることも勉強できました。

　私達もiPS細胞から心筋細胞を作っているので、活用してもらえるのではないかと期待しています。何かしらお役に立てると良いです。

　この日は升本先生のご発表が昼過ぎでしたし、先生は京都に帰らないといけなかったため、お食事などはご一緒できませんでしたが、このセミナーのすぐ前にあった再生医療学会では夕飯をご一緒することができました。研究に関する話と、研究の周囲の話と、研究じゃない話と、非常におもしろく、かつ勉強になりました。

We invited Dr. Hidetoshi Masumoto from Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Medicine to give an Institutional seminar. Just like with Dr. Hideya Sakaguchi, I had been thinking that I’d like to speak with someone working on cardiac organoids as part of my preparations for a certain grant application, and through yet another serendipitous opportunity, I was actually able to speak with Dr. Masumoto. It seems like “just another” opportunity keeps happening.

　Various types of cardiac organoids have been developed, but it’s fascinating that Dr. Masumoto’s organoids come in several forms, each selected based on the specific research objective. I was also surprised to learn that a vascular network actually forms within the organoids after they are transplanted into animals. Additionally, I learned that his cardiac organoids are being utilized as models for COVID-19 infections.

Since we are also generating cardiomyocytes from iPS cells, we hope that our work might be of use to him. I hope we can be of some help.

As Dr. Masumoto’s presentation was in the early afternoon and he had to return to Kyoto, we weren’t able to have dinner together that day. However, we did have dinner together at the JSRM meeting held just before this seminar. The conversation—covering research topics, things around research, and non-research topics—was incredibly interesting and educational.
