One-day Lab Trip to the Akigawa Valley

For the first time in three years—since 2023—We went on a one-day trip with the lab to the Akigawa Valley for trout fishing and a BBQ, followed by a visit to the Odake Cave. I remember that three years ago, it was an incredibly hot summer, but I felt like, “It’s hot here too, but it’s still better than the lab.” After that, the heat in 2024 and 2025 seemed to have gotten even worse. However, this year there weren’t that many sleepless nights even without air conditioning, and there were fewer sunny days, so I think it was a pretty OK summer. Because it’s been so unbearably hot lately, I’ve actually lost the ability to recall whether this is what it was like when I was a kid. Well, come to think of it, I don’t seem to have any memories of it being unbearably hot right after summer vacation ended. And since I went through elementary, middle, and high school without air conditioning in the classrooms—managing school life despite the heat—maybe this is what it was actually like. Maybe.

I digress, but we all went fishing for rainbow trout again, grilled them, and ate them. We brought meat and drinks with us, so I think we had plenty. Just like three years ago, we were also able to visit the limestone cave. Some people were there for the second time, while others were first-timers, and I could really feel the turnover in the group. It was great that more kids joined in—it made things livelier. Based on the lessons learned three years ago, I remembered that we didn’t really need that much ice or a tarp, but I completely forgot that we needed a large grill. I’ll make sure to bring one next time. It was wonderful that everyone from the lab was able to participate. I hope you all enjoyed this nice break and will continue to make progress on your research.
