バイエル循環器病研究助成 第32回研究発表会 in 第73回日本心臓病学会学術集会 / The 32th Bayer Scholarship for Cardiovascular Research Conference in the 73rd Scientific Session of Japanese College of Cardiology

　ご支援いただいた循環器病研究振興財団バイエル循環器病研究助成の成果を報告するために、第32回研究発表会に参加しました。毎年このバイエル循環器病研究助成 研究発表会は、日本心臓病学会学術集会のセッションの１つになっているそうで、今年は学会が開催された高知に向かいました。私は心臓病の研究をしながらも、臨床的な知識が不足しているので、財団のご厚意で第73回日本心臓病学会学術集会本体にも参加させていただきました。もちろん１回の学会参加で十分に知識が身につけられるわけはないのですが、それでも普段の学会とは異なる、臨床に直結した知識を得ることができました。症例報告という形の発表も、初めて参加させていただいたと思います。

　自身の発表も、４倍体iPS細胞由来心筋細胞について、助成いただいて進めることができた内容をほぼ全てをお話しすることができました。質疑応答でも、「そもそもなぜ心筋細胞は４倍体なのか」といった本質に迫る議論をさせていただきました（明確な答えはまだないのですが…）。今査読中の論文が早く通って、財団に少しでも恩返しができるとよいです。貴重な機会をいただき、財団のみなさま、関係者のみなさま、ありがとうございました。

　大学生のときに、青春18切符を使って高知県に来たことがあり、今回24年ぶりの再訪でした。あのときもひろめ市場はあったと思うのですが、ここまで店が密集して人が沢山いた記憶がないです。活気があり、楽しそうでした。やはり鰹のタタキは食べないといけないと思い、２回食べました。塩で食べるのが通のようです。さすが、普段スーパーで買っているのもそれなりにおいしくはあるのですが、別格においしかったです。青春18切符を使ったあの頃は時間がありましたが、飛行機で行って帰ってきました。大人になりました。もちろん、あの頃のあれはあれでよかったですが。

I attended the 32th Bayer Scholarship for Cardiovascular Research Conference at the 73rd Japanese Circulation Society Annual Meeting. My research is supported by the Bayer Scholoarship, and this meeting is to report the research progress. This year, I traveled to Kochi, where the society meeting was held, as the Bayer Scholoarship Conference is a part of the Society Meeting. While conducting heart disease research, I lack clinical knowledge. Thanks to the Foundation's generosity, I was also able to attend the main 73rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society. Of course, one conference attendance isn't enough to gain sufficient knowledge, but I still acquired clinically relevant insights distinct from regular conferences for me. I believe this was also my first time participating in a case report presentation.

　For my own presentation, I was able to cover nearly all the content I've been advancing with the foundation's support regarding tetraploid iPS cell-derived cardiomyocytes. During the Q&A, we even had discussions probing fundamental questions like “Why are cardiomyocytes tetraploid in the first place?” (though there's no clear answer yet...). I hope the paper currently under review gets accepted soon so I can repay the foundation at least a little. Thank you to everyone at the foundation and all involved for this invaluable opportunity.

　Back in my college days, I visited Kochi using the Seishun 18 Ticket (daily JR non-express tickets). This visit marked my return after 24 years. I believe Hirome Market was there back then too, but I don't recall it being this densely packed with shops and people. It was lively and seemed like a lot of fun. I absolutely had to try the seared bonito (katsuo no tataki) again, so I had it twice. Eating it with salt seems to be the connoisseur's way. As expected, it was exceptional – the stuff I usually buy at the supermarket is decent enough, but this was in a league of its own. Back when I used the Seishun 18 Ticket, I had unlimited time. This time, I flew in and out. I've grown up. Of course, those days were great in their own way.
