We had the 2nd Asia Pacific Droplet Digital PCR Symposium in Seoul, Korea. The 1st meeting was in Thailand, which I did not attend. This was another Bio-Rad-sponsored meeting, so I took days off from our institute again. That is the rule. We started a collaborative project on detection of genome editing events by droplet digital PCR with Bio-Rad, when I was a postdoc in the US, and it has worked out pretty well. That is why I am invited by Bio-Rad so often. Thanks to them, I am having a lot of opportunities to visit many countries and present our work there. I am happy with it.

There were many talks on diagnosis of cancer with liquid biopsies in the symposium. I did not know much about this field, but droplet digital PCR is the best technology for this purpose for sure, considering its sensitivity, power of absolute quantification, and turnaround time. My talk on genome editing was not in the mainstream of the symposium this time, but I still got a number of good questions. This was my first visit to Korea. I knew Korea and Japan are very close, and actually they are. Just a 2-hour flight from Tokyo to Seoul. Their language and characters are different from Japanese, but for me, Korea is by far the most culturally similar country to Japan. The streets, buildings, shops, restaurants, and people look similar. When I was in the US, the Gangnam Style song was a huge hit. I found that the hotel was actually in Gangnam. I was excited to be in Gangnam, but still do not understand what the Gangnam Style is, and nobody was dancing like that in Gangnam. I enjoyed a Korean BBQ too. The trip this time was just 2 days though, so I did not gain much body weight. I am good.

　第２回アジア太平洋Droplet Digital PCRシンポジウムが韓国、ソウルで開催され、参加してきました。第１回シンポジウムはタイだったそうですが、私は参加してません。今回もまたBio-Rad主催の会だったため、有給休暇を取りました。ルールにちゃんと従ってます。私がアメリカに留学していた間に、Bio-Radとdroplet digital PCRを使ってゲノム編集結果を検出するという共同研究を始め、とてもうまくいっているがために、Bio-Radによく招待されているわけです。彼らのおかげでいろんな国に行って、その先々で研究成果を発表することができているので、ありがたく思っています。 　シンポジウムでは、多くの液体生検（患者から採取した体液）を使ったガン診断についての講演を聴くことができました。あまりその分野に詳しくはないのですが、感度、絶対定量能力、測定に必要な時間などを考慮すると、droplet digital PCRが最適な技術であるのは間違いないだろうと思います。私自身のゲノム編集に関する講演は、会全体の主流とは少し外れていましたが、多くの鋭い質問を受けました。

　韓国初訪問でした。韓国と日本は近いというのは頭では知ってましたが、確かにその通りで東京からソウルの便は２時間しかかかりませんでした。言葉は違うのですが、やはり韓国は文化的に日本と最も近い国だと感じました。通りの雰囲気、建物、店やレストラン、人々が大体日本と同じような感じでした。 　アメリカ留学中に、Gangnam styleという歌が大流行していました。で、今回滞在したホテルがあるところが、まさにGangnamだったので嬉しかったのですが、未だ「Gangnam style」というのが何なのかよくわかりませんし、あんな風に踊っている人もいませんでした。韓国BBQも満喫しました。ただ、今回の出張はわずか２日だけだったので、体重増えてません。快調です。
